If all summer movies were this daring, comics enthusiasts would no longer have to suffer inferior Hollywood adaptations. Indeed, the American superhero comic book is a mythic genre that has finally been translated into a remarkable film. I'll save the shop-talk for last, but I will mention that in October Google changed the way they help their visitors find "real estate"; in October we held one of their top ten (generic) "oregon coast real estate" slots and got dropped to Page 4 and beyond. The change Google made was a great improvement and a help to all of us generally because in addition to helping their visitors find WHO they were looking for and WHAT they were looking for, they added the dimension of WHERE what and and who they were looking for is on the Internet; more exactly "where" than the Atlantic, Gulf or Oregon Coast - now it was down to the individual city or town on the Oregon Coast. Again, the Google change was a good deal for bringing exposure to our individual Oregon Coast cities and towns, it knocked the whole Oregon Coast as an entity and an attraction (for real estate) outa very top slots. So, from last October until about one week ago, we've spent day and night trying to restore our top slots status, and then when we finally got that fixed, then the Internet Service Provider gunnied on us. So, who can complain? This is Internet!! Not only did the ISP crash, coincidentally their billing arrived on the same day as the crash, with their new mailing address in Tornado Alley (Kansas). None should wonder why they haven't returned calls or e-mail or what kind of Karmic cloud they're under... So why don't we just squirt the whole kangaroo back into the servers? That's more boring "shop talk" that I'll save for last for whoever is interested. But to understand the Internet as a web, that has threads that are woven into place and that makes up a magic carpet to "surf" the Internet from within and without begins to explain why when it is real inter-active and participatory Internet, a mere squirt here and there don't make it... as I will explain in greater detail elsewhere. In the midst of all the way life usta be and ain't anymore, there is something on the horizon that may be of interest to anyone who cares about what the 1960s and 70s Whole Earth Catalog might have evolved into after all these years and the Burning Man besides... And speaking of Jazz, we received a new CD by Ken Filiano, a bass player. The CD is "subvenire" and a well orchestrated album. I was so impressed with just two hearings, 58 minutes each, that some kind of a spell was broken, and I stopped listening/watching TV news programs. This chap was bringing "news" that is far more interesting than the media fare, and caused me to be hungry for more. During the binge I dusted off an old Impulse recording of Charlie Mingus playing piano, and then I heard/watched the Dexter Gordon 'Round Midnight video, and then I watched/heard the PBS - Ken Burns History of Jazz (all 10 broadcasts). Until I heard Ken's record, I'd never heard of him, although he's been around; before returning to NY in the early '90s he was a "fixture" (as they say) on the west coast avant garde scene, and is associated with all sorts of people. Any of these names ring a bell? Rob Blakeslee, Vinny Golia, Richard Grossman, Roswell Rudd, or maybe Paul Smoker? Ed. note city says, Roswell Rudd!! Yes. I heard him in the late 1960s in L.A., and the cats he was playing with were exploring an edge of Jazz just beyond where Charles Lloyd took it to - take all of 1940s and 50s Jazz and where it went with those who invented bebop, and Charles Lloyd, and in the first two albums of The Jazz Crusaders, THAT Jazz maxed just then and right there. There are dozens of other Jazz history stories that include the Bill Graham's San Francisco concert scene, the Beatles and Luis Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Miles having learned the magic of home electronics, but never mind... I said all that to say Ken Filiano's "subvenire" is a bridge from where Charles Lloyd left it, through Roswell Rudd, and somehow, hello, "Modern Jazz" without a quartet. Ken's is a solo (bass) album, and a most pleasurable Jazz listen, particularly for anyone who wants to know what been happening in Jazz over the past 30-some years... OR as his proud mum might say, it is very beautiful and listenable. That too, and it came out early this year on Nine Winds. So, with the exception of a Joe McCarthy Revival in the cloneship of John Ashcroft, I don't have any other kick-ass news today. The Reuters article by Joanne Kenen, Secret Joe McCarthy Hearings Opened After 50 Years is a good starting point. The "Revival" is copped from JapanToday, and has some interesting reader comments. Here's a new SARS resource from Lycos, and drhealth (Walt Edwards) has cranked out his new newsletter, wherein he writes that the United States reports more incidents of colon cancer than any country in the world. Avoiding cancer is a matter of diet and common sense. And one more on the subject of health, and mental health, ex-weapons inspector and former Marine Scott Ritter is calling for regime change in Washington. Meanwhile, The Scotsman reports in a article by Brian Brady that Scottish MP Tam Dalyell who says a Zionist Cabal Runs Policy On Israel is either onto something or he's really nuts: Tony Blair has been accused of surrounding himself with a "cabal" of Jewish advisers in an astonishing attack by Scotland's most senior MP. Tam Dalyell, the Father of the House, says Blair aides are skewing British foreign policy on the Middle East in favour of the Israeli government. Dalyell suggests Blair was "unduly influenced" by figures including Lord Levy, Labour's chief fund-raiser and Blair's unofficial envoy to the region, Peter Mandelson, and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, an Anglican who had a Jewish grandfather. The Linlithgow MP, who is notorious for his outspoken views on a wide variety of controversial subjects, was quoted in the latest edition of the American magazine Vanity Fair in a profile of Blair. In a passage on Blair's "staunch" support of Israel, Vanity Fair writer David Margolick states: "The senior member of the House of Commons, Tam Dalyell, even tells me he thinks Blair is unduly influenced by a cabal of Jewish advisers. He mentions Mandelson, Lord Levy and Jack Straw." Yesterday, when Scotland on Sunday checked the quotes with Dalyell, he replied: "I'm very open about this. I wouldn't say I've been misquoted." Dalyell, the longest-serving MP in the Commons, said hawks in Washington were already too close to the right-wing Likud government of Israeli leader Ariel Sharon. Dalyell told Scotland on Sunday: "Blair and Straw have become far too close to these people and Lord Levy, who is an unaccountable ambassador in the Middle East, is part of this group. They are acting on an extremely Zionist, Likud-nik agenda. In particular I am concerned that some of them are pushing for an attack on Syria, for reasons of Israeli security. "It is an enormously sensitive issue and that's why very many of us have been extremely reticent about it, because we donut want to be seen as anti-Semitic." Labour MP Louise Ellman, a prominent member of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee Against Anti-Semitism, said: "This absurd proposition implies a Jewish plot in high places rather like the Prodigals of the Elders of Zion." Both Ellman and former Tory Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind said Blair had been prominent in encouraging Bush to make progress on the Road Map for peace that could lead to an independent Palestinian state within two years. Rifkind, a senior member of Scotland's well-established Jewish community, said: "We all know that Tam gets bees in his bonnet and eight times out of 10 they are nuts but the other two are brilliant. This is, I'm afraid, one of the nutty ones." One, the Condi Rice admission of the Bush administration having lied about the "evidence" they had re: Saddam's WMD, thereby making their deadly little war in Iraq somewhat a farce; and two, how about that 800 page report on what the Bush administration knew and when (in advance) about 911? No "conspiracy theory" intended; and three, the "Top Gun" kick-off of the Republican half of the 2004 Election... Drug Decriminalization Debate... In Brazil by Al Giordano President Lula da Silva has weighed in forcefully, noting that the violence and crime associated with drug trafficking under prohibition can't be blamed on the poor person, pushed into crime "to earn his daily bread," but, that, rather, the real narcos can be found "in the large centers of capital." And Lula, in a major public speech, instructed his Attorney General and Public Safety Secretary to stop going after the small-fry and go after the big shots - the money-launderers - instead: Although other heads of state - notably Jorge Batlle in Uruguay (in 2000) and Vicente Fox in Mexico (2001) - have called for drug decriminalization, Brazil's President Lula da Silva is the first that seems to have a strategy toward implementing that goal. While his Health Ministry has proposed "harm reduction" programs to diminish the damages associated with the use of certain drugs under prohibition, Lula's law enforcement officials - most notably his Attorney General Marcio Thomaz Bastos and his Public Safety Secretary Luis Eduardo Soares - have also called for drug decriminalization. Today's report brings you Bastos' testimony, last Thursday, before the full Senate, where he reiterated his support for decriminalization of drug users. What is interesting, and unprecedented, though is the strategy being deployed: To shift the resources of law enforcement away from chasing and imprisoning the drug user and small dealer, and to instead go after the white-collar narco-traffickers, the ones who launder illicit drug money to make it appear to come from legal business activity. It's what boxers call a "one-two punch." One, knock the opponent off balance with the calls for decriminalization, and, Two, knock him to the floor by going after the big drug money that never gets touched. Could this lead to a knockout of drug prohibition? In my report on these developments, I suggest that there is a political element to this strategy, one that gives the prohibitionist elites only one "exit door" to avoid their drug war persecutions from bouncing back upon them: To support legalization, amnesty for all drug war convicts and defendants, and end the prohibition once and for all. Is going after the money-launderers, the real narcos in what Lula calls the "large centers of capital," consistent with an anti-prohibitionist strategy? Do you think that if a major government finally did target, effectively, the white-collar narcos, that the elites, including the Commercial Media, would continue to prop up prohibitionist ideology and regimes? Should this strategy be deployed in other lands, like your own? Politicians in every land talk about stopping drug money laundering, but their policies continue to fill the prisons with the poor. Michael Moore's documentary, Bowling for Colombine, wins at France's prestigious awards ceremony in Paris.
In his acceptance speech Moore thanked France for "having the courage to stand up and say no" to US plans to attack Iraq. "One of the best definitions of an ally, of a friend, is that your friend is the one who can tell you when you're wrong," he said. "So thank you for showing us the way, for standing up and for something very important... I want to let you know that there are tens of millions of Americans who feel the same way." Moroccan artists pay tribute to US anti-war stars.
