Worden Ed. note: Two important issues were dumped onto the editor's desk since I last wrote. A question of censorship or self-censorship, and real patriotism and love for this country in difficult times. First, we received e-mail from a person whose photo appeared on our Overnight News and in the Florence Peace Theater pictorial, asking that we remove her photograph because she wanted no connection to an editor who is a racist or a bigot, or his (my) newspaper. Over the years, I have never answered the ridiculous comments anyone has ever made about me or my newspaper. Neither have I ever taken the advice from friend or foe about what gets written on or posted to this website, up until now. One, I did modify the photograph of the writer but as a matter of the writer's privacy. The "Will Work for Peace" message didn't get lost in the alteration or altercation. So not only did I make what I deemed to be an appropriate and reasonable revision, for the first time since we began the Wedderburn-Nye Beach Courier (1993 - and which became the Oregon Coast News Signal when we went online in 1996), I answered the criticism, which had 911 not happened, might not even have been an issue.

I have removed your "image" from the OverNight News page at Oregon Coast News Signal, and I have removed the "Will Work for Peace" pic on the Florence Peace Theater website (which we donated to the cause). I contend editorially that the United States is becoming the most despised "regime" of world government since the advent of Nazi Germany which used the swastika. Further, I contend editorially that the United States is becoming a re-run of the very same fascistic kind of government the United States fought against in WWII. My dad fought in that war. After being in shot, in North Africa, when he recovered they sent him to Anzio, where he was captured by the Germans. It has been only within the past year that I learned what a horrific battle conditions the 45th Infantry suffered, in North Africa, and then the fiasco at Anzio. My dad passed away in 1992. In all our life growing up, he never spoke of the war. Now I know why. After being captured at Anzio, what was left of the 45th were marched to Germany; to Stalag VIIB. Another horror story that had no resemblance to Stalag XVII (the movie) or Hogan's Hero (the TV series), and again, from what I have learned about Stalag VIIB, it is understandable WHY my dad never spoke of 18 months of living outdoors and fed cabbage root soup as a Prisoner of War. Real war, even in Iraq, is just too horrible to speak of. Now we have a situation where the stewards of the United States government are behaving in such a way as to shame us no end in the eyes of the whole wide world. In the name of a War on Terrorism, the United States government is in the process of doing to American citizens what the Nazi regime did to both the Germans (making it ok to look the other way) and what they did to the Jews. The Question of Sustaining an American Empire or Rebuilding Americas Defenses Strategy, Forces and Resources For A New Century* aside, among the ironies is that half of WHY we're going after Saddam is so the U.S. and British petroleum companies can get 100% control of Saddam's oil. The other reason we're going after Saddam is for the unspecified benefit of Israel. Ironically, the current "regime" in Israel is no friend of the U.S., and God knows they are no friend of the Palestinian, who they are attempting to cause the expulsion of from the region. Except for considerations we don't know, WHY should the United States send American soldiers into Iraq for oil companies or foreign nations who don't have the interest of ordinary American people at heart? Some of us have recognized the U.S. drift toward fascism since the late 1960s, when Nixon was implementing the Southern Strategy (revisited due to Trent Lott), using the "silent majority" to justify government terror in our (American) cities, then there was the matter of Vietnam... While many of my friends were taking LSD and attending Grateful Dead concerts, I was nearly killed (murdered) due to my anti-war efforts back in those days; cranking mimeo and shouting out through the bars to fellow prisoners on the subject of why we are here. The great poet d.a.levy (Daryl Allen Levy) was the first I knew to define the fascistic "drift" as the "4th Reich". In memory of levy (who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in Cleveland, in 1969), I wrote the (offensive swastika) "Bush as Fuhrer" page. It is obvious that whoever complained to you about that the site containing "anti semitic symbols" and "words offensive to many" had not read the page OR they were out to "shoot (yours truly) the messenger". Although levy shot himself, he was already dying of a broken heart - that his fellow Clevelanders stood by silently (during the Vietnam war) as he was protesting, and that they stood by silently as the Cleveland police arrested him... Not much has changed since levy died. The "poet" was fighting for free speech, and a free press, as he was cranking out mimeograph at the time and was arrested for his warning about the government's drift toward fascism. In the 1960s they did arrest people for such "crimes" and then there was cointel... Today they contact my advertisers and others to scare them with false "warnings" that Oregon Coast News Signal or the editor is pro-Nazi or anti-Semitic. In fact, I am a devoted and authentic Muslim, and so certainly I am a better friend to "People of the Book" (authentic Jews and authentic Christians, and the anti-war movement) than the people who are spreading the false warnings. Our government knew what was happening to the Jews in Germany while it was happening because "stories" had found their way into the New York Times. America and the world stood by, looked the other way, and today we say, "Never again!" That is what "Bush as Fuhrer" is about: Never, ever again! The Bush Family was sleeping with the Nazis then, and today they're sleeping with Carlyle Group, the Sa'udi Family, and Don Rumsfeld stood silent (when he was in Baghdad) and WHILE Saddam was using WMD on the Kurds and the Iranians. Racism, bigotry, trouble making and the mischief makers' perpetuating the status quo tactic (including an opportunity to zing free speech, free press and embarrass a Muslim besides is truly is at the heart of WHY I had to alter the images, and why you had to ask. Among those who are engaged in the peace process, we are one of the most respected online journals of (what we say is) the militant liberal fight against the greater evil of nihilist fundamentalism. The "I'll Work for Peace" piece (photo) brought us a lot of favorable comment; Pulitizer Prize (photography) - real "Life" magazine stuff, and says it all, and so on... Score one for the pro-war, anti-free speech and anti-free press racists and bigots. They have effectively divided our effort in confronting their un-American activities, including their mindless complicity in "looking the other way" while Bush & Company take us to a war, and deprive us of our Constitutional rights at the same time. We are each important to the peace process. I encourage you to continue on, and certainly I don't question your devotion to the process. I hope you'll realize that it isn't just a matter of lodging a protest with George W and his Military Industrial Complex buddies, but even our so-called "friends" (who give false warnings) have to be confronted and brought over to help us rather than hurt us and the very peace we are trying to bring about. The article he sent this time titled (FORSAKEN ROOTS) was a "forward" written by someone else, but an important read for anyone who wants to get a true pulse of what is going on in our post-911 America, speaking of what ain't so funny anymore. My response follows: My sincere thanks for the "Forsaken Roots" article. It really does say things that ARE true (a rare commodity), and things that are perceived to be true. As "conceptual ideas" go, it is a gold mine. While I will read it again and again, and I'll likely discuss parts of it from time to time, I just want to say for now that the great loss had as much if not more to do with how far so-called "Christians" drifted away from the Christianity of the Founding Fathers' than/as it had to do with a bunch of political correctees finding their way into the Supreme Court. Too bad the same can't be said of Billy and Franklin Graham, the 1950s-1960s "Prophets" of the Mormon Church, Jimmy-Joe and Tammy-Faye Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts, and here lately the Bob Jones University. Although both in my opinion are the sworn enemies of God, nothing riles me as much as the misunderstanding the Sa'udis* and the pre-Revolution Iranians** had about siding with us (the U.S.) over the British. When we said we were a "Christian Nation" (as per the Forsaken Roots essay you sent along), and that we were "One Nation Under God", the Sa'udi and the Iranians believed us. Then they found out the truth. No different really than WHY the Supreme Court turned against the domestic hypocrites. Gandhi had some sense of this conceptual idea being a "working" ideal, but then others had other ideas and India (as one) became India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and the fodder for Salman Rushdie's "Shame" (the book). As per the words and spirit of Patrick Henry, the United States is indeed the greatest country on the face of the earth for all who have been afforded the freedom of worship here. So-called "foreigners" know this better than the so-called "natives" who take it for granted. While nominals and pseudo-Christians are running things, life is being made unnecessarily miserable and frightening for all of us. Today, 22JAN2003, Bush spoke on one of the cable news stations, about our either being with him or we are the enemy. I've got news for him. Most sane and sensible and peace loving people are NOT with him. For us to be deemed an "enemy" of the United States, is so much BS, and as they say, there is so little time... No matter the circumstances, it wouldn't be happening to (mainly) white people, except the French!! But just as Bush made a terrible mistake in labeling Iran and North Korea as his own personal Axis of Evil, to take on the French is also to take on the French Resistance. They were ferocious fighters against Fascist occupation, and they always been loyal to America, from the beginnings of this country, and in the 1920s, all the way up 'til WWII, and after the war, on into the 1950s, they were always gracious hosts to America's best writers, artists, poets and musicians. *The Sa'udi sold out Sunni Islam for "protection" from the Wahabbi. **The Shah set himself up as a (Persian) king to be worshipped.
