The original question was are CNN and MSNBC onto something re: the Tacoma, Bellingham and Ft. Lewis story, OR are we watching the Keystone Kops in action? A re-run of catching a couple of Latinos in a white van parked next to a phone booth in VA??
The thought is plickening... Now, at least we have a name or two...
2:48ayem update 24OCT2002: Apparently two "individuals of interest" have been apprehended in Maryland. Our sources indicate the sniper is NOT those two wanted men, but two people trying to cash in on the matter. If there are more snipings in the days ahead, we still won't know all that much because of the "copy cat" or This is Sports?" factor...
John Allen Muhammad or John Allen Williams
John Allen Williams, also known as Muhammad Williams or John Allen Muhammad, is being sought in connection with a "fire arms violation"; you know, "fire arms violations" as in Randy Weaver, David Koresch and/or Timothy McVeigh.
Muhammad/Williams is said to have worked at Ft. Lewis. He could have been a professionally trained sniper OR he could have been a back up soldier for professionally trained snipers.
This story will get legs and become what John Ashcroft refers to as "a defining day in America's war on terrorism," when, if and/or as there is a connection made between that alleged maniacal mini-cell up in Portland (Patrice Lumumba Ford, Muhammad Ibrahim Bilal, Ahmed Ibrahim Bilal, Jeffrey Battle, and October Martinique Lewis - a sixth suspect, Habis Abdulla al Saoub, remains at large). Is he charged with a "firearms violation" too?
A connection or not, the genie is already outa the toothpaste tube

22OCT2002 Keystone Kops versus the Cereal Killer
10ayem update: We now have 10 dead and three wounded victims of the so-called "Beltway Sniper". This morning a 40 year-old bus driver was cut down by a single shot to the chest while standing on the steps of his bus.

Madam Zorah called the other morning to say her psychic knobs revealed that the President of the United States has enemies, and that the VA/MD/DC shooters are just practicing for a major event. MZ predicts November 11th as the day a white ship with a red (white and blue) flag will sink into a blue ocean. While attribution for the latter can't be specified, not even by a psychic, neither can the shootings be blamed on Bill and Hillary, not even by Rush.
As of breakfast time (on Saturday), logic had it that the "sniper" had already been taken out, just as the non-Jewell Olympic Bomber disappeared from the scene, and the anthrax killer. Gone. Or (fake "Christian") Christian Identity (labeled by the media as "militia") is hooked up with a "terrorist" cell of some type. If you say you hate cops who look the other way while the local in-breeds harass outsiders, call the Militia. Never mind. Maybe the same organizations as were behind the scenes in the Oklahoma Bombing with Timothy McVeigh on their front line, even if McVeigh didn't know how he was being manipulated at the time. The thinking on this one is that the truck bomb alone couldn't have done as much damage as was actually done. Unfortunately for solving the crime, the evidence was quickly removed from the scene before there could be an investigation; just what a good conspiracy (theory) needs to keep the story fresh. Yeah. Fresh militia stories abound. Me dear wife suggested at breakfast that it is the sniper's pattern to break the pattern; i.e., to shoot someone over the weekend. She also picked the Giants over the Angels. 24 hours later, the Angels win in Anahiem, and the cops are deporting Mexicans from VA.
For the truly thoughtful, how about some breakfast serial?
According to our Southern Oregon Militia friend Carl Worden, the shell casing found in the rental truck that was seized in VA was not a .223 and was therefore eliminated as being associated with the Beltway Sniper? HOLD IT!!! He said in a previous e-mail, "A .308 shell casing loaded with a .223 sabot round would make an untraceable sniper bullet for urban use..."
So what is a sabot round?
"It is a plastic sleeve that wraps around a .223 bullet, thus protecting the bullet from coming into contact with the lands and grooves of the barrel's rifling. The outside measurement of the sleeve is .308, so it loads into a .308 shell casing perfectly, while encompassing the .223 bullet. When the bullet leaves the barrel, the sleeve splits apart and falls away, leaving the .223 bullet on its flight path to the target, unmarked by any ballistic rifling marks that can be traced back to the rifle. It is an extremely accurate load that can be fired in short, scoped pistols like the TC Contender. So if stopped and checked, the gun would be found chambered for the .308 and not the .223 everybody is looking for."
Nothing can be more disconcerting for the sniper than to be cheated. Without the .223 (from the flesh of the most recent shooting victim), no one knows if it was the sniper or if a copy cat was the culprit - which they wouldn't know anyhow because the "copy cat" would be using .223s. Right??

21OCT2002 This and that and then some...
Although Bush & Company seem to be conducting a contrived back-peddling on the Iraq war, the protests seem to be growing from week to week. Flat out, they couldn't get solid support not even from France, and the Methodists wouldn't support the Bush bash either - considering it an unjust war - as opposed to Just War which ok for Methodists to wage. On Saturday, tens of thousands of protesters are due to visit Washington. To rain on the protest parade, might the DC sniper get a few shots off? There has been a lot of speculation on who the shooter(s) might be; ranging from "spree killer to serial killer to extortionist..." Maybe they (he/she) is just a cold blooded psycho who has no motive and believes in nothing.
When Hillary and Gephardt sided with Bush on the war initiative, speaking of sinking ships, and editorially speaking, after the November 5th election, we'll be looking more toward the Greens for keeping our own ship alfoat and for any news of peace.
Also there seems to be a consensus that Y2K is coming back. We'll post reports in our This is Sports? You bet! and Weather Report pages.
