11SEP2002 U.S. Official Admits to Perjury: Invented "FARC-Al Qaida link" Under oath and "the penalties and pains of perjury" last November, Assistant Secretary of State Rand Beers lied when he said, "It is believed that FARC terrorists have received training at Al Qaida terrorist camps in Afghanistan" thus toying with the emotions of American citizens after the 911 attacks in order to justify, of all things, aerial herbicide attacks on Ecuadoran peasant farmers near the Colombia border. Now Beers swears under oath that his outrageous and shocking statement was false. [MORE] ![]() 10SEP2002 911? Bullshit!! - We lost more than people on that fateful day. Joan Rivers and Lennie Bruce were right. That said, from the looks at the look back to September 11, 2001, you'd think only white people were killed at WTC and the Pentagon. While the media would have us focus on WHO we lost, the reality of 911 is that we lost (past tense) WHAT we were as the only Constitutionally free people on the face of the earth. Elsewhere we've spoken of the "America experiment" that has failed, and probably forever. Some great writers and journals have addressed the issue: Reason's 911 anniversary package from the October print edition, focuses on the trade off between security and liberty: www.reason.com/0210/911.shtml Nick Gillespie Editor's Note: Life after 911 Nick Gillespie Freedom for Safety - An old trade... and a useless one. Ted Galen Carpenter Fixing Foreign Policy - How the U.S. should wage the war on terror. Jesse Walker Laughter in the Ruins - What hasn't changed since 911 Peter Bagge Who's to Blame for 911? Preconceived notions never die - or fade away. AlterNet has culled together some kick ass articles for the occasion including NATIONAL SECURITY: It's Empire Versus Democracy by Tom Hayden, NATIONAL SECURITY: It's Still a Free Country by John K. After the 911 bullshit is over ('til next year), we can focused on preventing George WWIII's WWIII, and do some serious voter registration for the November 5th elections. 07SEP2002 Why worry about the Financial Action Task Force "September 11, in part, happened because international law enforcement was collecting too much information on too many people who posed little risk, while too little attention was paid to the small number that posed a very high risk." -- Richard Rahn 04SEP2002 Detention Camps? - Time to Sack Ashcroft Because of Nat Hentoff's current Village Voice article prompted by an earlier article (no longer available on the L.A. Times site where it was originally published), a heads-up to "Ashcroft's plan for detention camps for 'enemy' U.S. citizens" arrived from Declan's Politech list today. [MORE] 03SEP2002 Nelson Mandela and Saddam Hussein condemn U.S. threats Former South African President Nelson Mandela voiced a stinging rebuttal to U.S. arguments that an attack is necessary because Saddam is developing nuclear weapons that he can use to threaten his neighbors. Mandela said he tried unsuccessfully to lodge his objections by phone to President Bush, and spoke instead with Powell and Bush's father, the former president. Mandela said, "We are really appalled by any country, whether a superpower or a small country, that goes outside the U.N. and attacks independent countries. What they are saying is introducing chaos in international affairs, and we condemn that in the strongest terms." The United States has a special responsibility to exercise restraint because "they are the only superpower in the world today, and they must be exemplary in everything they do," Mandela said. [MORE] Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein also spoke on the issue, saying that Washington is insisting on overthrowing him in order to control the region's oil supplies: "America thinks if it controls the oil of the Middle East then it will control the world." [MORE] Iraq's longtime rival Iran warned that it would not stand by if its neighbor is attacked. Only the Iraqi people - not a world power - should determine the country's future, and a group of 37 Protestant and other church leaders from North America and Britain sent letters to their respective governments Friday expressing concern about "the likely human costs of war with Iraq, particularly for civilians. Hampton, who played with many of the leading lights of jazz from Louis Armstrong to Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker, wrote more than 200 pieces of music over his long career including the jazz standards "Flying Home," "Evil Gal Blues" and "Midnight Sun." He joined the Benny Goodman quartet in the '30s with drummer Gene Krupa and pianist Teddy Wilson, breaking racial barriers that had largely kept black musicians from performing with whites in public. "He was really a towering jazz figure," said saxophonist Sonny Rollins. "He really personified the spirit of jazz because he had so much joy about his playing." -- Wired's Ephemera Herb Boyd - The Black World Today Steve Paul - The Kansas City Star Tamm E Hunt - The Black World Today Peter Watrous - New York Times Josh Grossberg - E! An Open Letter to Maj. Gen. Bruce Lawlor by Douglas Valentine "The implication or latent threat of force alone was sufficient to insure that the people would comply..." -- William Colby EXCERPT: Having potential war criminals in positions of power is nothing new, but I'm one of those people who believe that all former CIA officers--especially those involved in "extra-legal" counter-terror programs like Phoenix--should not be allowed to hold public office. I believe this, because the CIA is antithetical to democratic institutions. And that's why I was so surprised to see, that the guy I knew as "Bruce", is now Major General Lawlor, and a top-ranking official in the ominous Office of Homeland Security. By which I mean, he's someone who has access to Ashcroft's political blacklist, and he has control over the covert action teams that can be used to neutralize those dissidents."
