15AUG2002 John Ashcroft a Menace to Civilization
Internet newsblogs, lists, newsgroups, e-mail from friends, and chatter down at the local pub discussing Camps for Citizens: Ashcroft's Hellish Vision Attorney general shows himself as a menace to liberty by Jonathon Turley. What connection to Abdullah al Muhajir aka Jose Padilla is today's Ashcroft story? Only two months have passed since Carl Worden wrote his Padilla Test Run article. Today Carl has added a kind of "I told you so" post script: The Padilla Test Run is Over, and it was a stellar success for the federal government - and which leads right back to Ashcroft. Peter DeFazio questions risks of U.S. attack of Iraq The administration has refused to answer a number of critical questions: What is the urgency of the threat posed by Saddam Hussein to the security of the United States? Would not a policy of enforcing no-fly zones, vigorous weapons inspections, and military sanctions be effective at containing the perceived threat as they have been for the past decade? How does the Iraqi threat compare with the threat posed by other nations with weapons of mass destruction, including Iran, Pakistan, China, North Korea and others? Is the administration considering preemptive strikes against these nations as well? Doesn't an invasion of Iraq make it more likely that Saddam Hussein will feel compelled to use weapons of mass destruction, or to give them to terrorist groups, in an effort to save his own hide? If Saddam Hussein is removed from power, then what? Does the administration plan on occupying Iraq indefinitely? Does war with Iraq increase the likelihood that nominally pro-Western regimes in Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia will be overthrown by Islamic radicals? What impact would such a result have on our democratic allies in the Middle East? What potential disruptions to the U.S. economy could result from a war with Iraq? Would war lead to the disruption of oil supplies? What would war do to the confidence of consumers and investors? How much would the war and its aftermath cost U.S. taxpayers? How would this be paid for when the federal budget is hundreds of billions of dollars in deficit? 14AUG2002 L.A. Times sportswriter fired over email sent to Congressman California Congressman Bill Thomas, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee ratted out sportswriter Brian Robin to his employer because he expressed an opinion. Is this what that TIPS program is all about? Imagine losing your job because of an email you sent to an elected PUBLIC SERVANT. Thomas doesn't seem to realize he works for me, you and Brian Robin and that by representing citizens, every single action and statement of his that affects the public is subject to scrutiny. [MORE] Ed. note: Besides (the above) linking to an outrageous story, it is also very entertaining in a time when irony combined with 911 and Joan Rivers provides little relief to John Ashcroft, the architect of TIPS being on the U.S. government payroll. |

13AUG2002 'War On Terror' Denies Right To Strike?
A labour war looming on West coast U.S. docks could become the defining union conflict of the Bush era. But the traditional bargaining issues - wages, benefits and working conditions - have been pre-empted by a much more basic one: do dockers have the right to strike at all? Union leaders fear signs that President George W. Bush will attempt to benefit from his ongoing 'war on terror' to label any future strike by the workers a "threat to national security". [MORE] 13AUG2002 Narco News Names Eminem ![]() Journalism is in a state of 911 -- Al Giordano The eleven months since September 11, 2001, have brought commercial journalism's worst, most simulating, and most knowingly dishonest, year in modern history. With VERY few exceptions - and you know who you are, so you won't mind our saying it - the people who call themselves "journalists" have cowered in fear during the past 11 months. They haven't asked the right questions, nor offered decent answers to the post-9/11 syndrome and its consequences gripping the population in the United States of America and elsewhere. That it took a popular rap singer-songwriter to meet the deadline that commercial journalists feared to meet... that it took Marshall Mathers to offer the counter-discourse to the official lies that too many members of our profession did not... is a damning indictment on the journalism industry in our era. But the good news, kind readers, is that the youth see through the bullshit: Marshall Mathers' latest album - "The Eminem Show" - is now the top-selling music album in human history. This is not an advertisement (we don't even know the guy). But we make our arguments for why this unexpected voice has outdone even the journalists at journalism in the year 2002 in our essay published today: Eminem's Antidote to September 11th: The Rapper "With a Plan to Ambush this Bush Administration" Conquers the Music Charts. Coincidentally, I saw/heard a video clip as I was flickin' through the dial tonight. Personally, Diz or Bird sez it in a way that is easier on my mind and how I sort the equations but now since I've heard the kid, I can't deny all you say. Rather than "review" The Boss' 911 piece, maybe I'll re-review Tom Joad. Your paragraphs (above and) on Springsteen, Danny Schechter, Cornography, Mike Ruppert, "howl" (for Allen), and Lennie; just right! Thanks for all you do anyhow, and thanks for the eminem piece and lifting the lid as they say, and as they say, be careful on the streets and calle wa-salaam 12AUG2002 Politics, Money Erode U.S. Trust in Judiciary American Bar Association found that nearly three out of four citizens are concerned about the fairness and impartiality of elected judges who raise money to finance their campaigns.
