An OCNS Editorial

Support for Democrat candidates is crucial. When it is convenient the Republicans tell us about how they want smaller government, but then they impose more government and more government intrusion into the lives of ordinary Americans than any we've ever known. They tell us how they'll run government like a business. The way Bush ran Harken? The way Cheney ran Halliburton? These aren't flip questions rhetorically speaking. Gordon Smith is up to his whatevers in agriculture gone wrong in this country. A congress under the Republicans means more welfare for the already rich Corporate Farms at the expense of the ordinary taxpayer, while food safety, nutrition and farm labor bites the dust. The Republicans still want to privatize Social Security; to invest some portion of American workers' retirement in Las Vegas Casinos or Wall Street? The list goes on and on...

Criminal Justice has become an industry enabling the rich to get richer. The so-called War on Drugs is designed to criminalize and institutionalize the population for the benefit of privately-owned prison corporations and to keep ordinary citizens from voting. Too simplistic an observation? Besides national implications, the international implications stretch from the poppy fields of Afghanistan to cocaine traffic in Bolivia, Columbia and Peru, leading all the way up to Mexico, California, Texas and downtown Miami's chad machine.

Electing "democrats" and Democrats to Congress is our only hope for protection from what in the first twenty months of the Bush/Ashcroft administration could hardly have been predicted. 911 and Sa'udi Arabia. Oil and Energy. The Bush - bin Laden - Carlyle Group connection. The Corporate-Government War Machine. With a congressional rubber-stamp in the hands of the Republicans, we'll only get more of the same.

09AUG2002 $141M FunBeam Fraud Case Settled

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A federal judge signed off Friday on a $141 million settlement of a class-action fraud suit that investors who lost money on Funbeam Corp. stock brought against the bankrupt appliance maker.

The suit accused the Boca Raton-based maker of Oster, Mr. Coffee, First Alert and the FunBeam ScrewMaster brands and its officers of inflating stock prices and misleading investors about the company's sales and earnings in the 18-month period leading up to the ouster of chairman and chief executive Al Dunlap in June 1998.

U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks signed the settlement agreement, which will provide about $106 million for investors. Attorneys estimated investors will be compensated for 12 percent to 15 percent of their losses.

05AUG2002 Teamsters to endorse TIPS informant plan?

Declan wrote: "The Teamsters union (http://www.teamster.org/about/division.htm) is composed of millions of workers, including flight attendants, pilots, parking attendants, construction workers, truck drivers, mechanics, manufacturing workers, police, city bus drivers, local government clerks, convention workers, hotel workers, zookeepers, and so on. That's a lot of potential informants."

The union has indeed posted James R. Hoffa, Junior's betrayal of the American people, and has attempted to brown-shirt the union membership in the process.

We were a union household all my growing up and adult life. When Jimmy Hoffa was doing deals with the quasi-legitimized mob, ultimately there was no shame in it and no workers were harmed. Some mob members wound up dead in parking lots, and Jimmy might be buried under one of them but that's two (other) different stories. When Jimmy and the hard hats backed Nixon and the Vietnam war, that was a shame but that was also the end result of the Hoffa/Kennedy feud in which besides Jimmy went missing, JFK and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. Still, that was politics, business and Texas oil money gone way wrong.

Just as James R. has betrayed the union and the American people by sleeping with Bush/Ashcroft, he is found out to not have a clue as to what this union is about and who the administration is. I agree with your anonymous writer that the union membership should oust Hoffa at their earliest possible convenience for sucking up an administration that is sure to stab the Teamsters in the back, and for his attempt to punk the membership off into a body of snitches. Forget Stalin. Forget Hitler. See: Ceausescu. Also see Carl Worden's comments on the Assassination of JFK.

04AUG2002 Law West of the Pecos

No different than the South Oregon Coast, in Kern County Oregon, they shoot first and ask questions later. In the case of the two girls who were snatched off a lovers' lane in L.A. County and driven into the desert where they were raped, before they were killed, the cops killed the perp. So what's wrong with this case on it's face?? How is it that the girls' parents allowed them to be with those boys in a lovers slain situation? How is it the boys allowed themselves to be ducktaped and their girlfriends be taken at all? And since when do we leave the police to be judge, jury and executioner in desert shootout situations - even when the perp deserves to die?? [MORE] - In progress

03AUG2002 Merry Christmas!!

Let me be the first to wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy Anniversary of 911. Although they don't make such a big deal out of the Oklahoma City bombing anymore, since the author of The Turner Diaries (the blue print for Timothy McVeigh's dastardly act) has died, and Timothy Mc Veigh, and since they were both white home-growns rather than being middle east terrorist-types, ditto the Anthrax bomber, during the days and weeks preceding September 11, 2002, there should be days of mourning, re-runs of the buildings collapsing and Presidents Day-type sales with some real bargains to be had.

There is plenty of 911 humor to go around. Did you hear the one about a bunch of Sa'udis flying a couple of planes into a couple of our buildings in NYC, killing nearly 3,000 of our people, and then we retaliate by sending soldiers and bombers into Afghanistan, killing 5,000 of their citizens? Not very funny, really, but when you realize the appointed President of Afghanistan has a connection to Enron and Unocal, it's easy to see there is something funnier going on around here than the Kennedy Assassination(s); speaking of who is deprived of civil rights, the Bill of Rights and Constitutional rights besides. [MORE] - In progress

02AUG2002 What's the Kennedy Assassination got to do with it?

Our friend Carl Worden suggests a "secret government" is running things these days. Could it be that the BATF, CIA, FBI, NSA and the Secretary of the Navy puppet string-pullers are acting in a treasonous manner by going silent on 911 warnings, for example, and now they're out to prosecute those who blew the whistle on those who failed to warn us in advance of the terrorist attack?

Taking our country back means taking our country back from those who took it away from us. [MORE] - In progress

01AUG2002 Critics of Palestinians never quit complaining

They complained that it was unfair to send children with explosives strapped to their bodies to kill Israelis, and when the Palestinians quit the practice and just left bombs here and there to be set off at a distance by remote control, still the critics complain. Never mind that "terrorists" are calling for the removal of every "Israeli" from Palestine, and Sharon continues building more "settlements" for more Zionists in what before the Balfour Declaration was considered Palestine. After the latest attack on the Israelis, Hamas is said to having regrets for killing Americans in the Jerusalem university explosions. [MORE] - Israeli occupation and "settlements" continue.

AFL-CIO President Demands Corporate Reform

Former Enron, WorldCom and Arthur Andersen employees join other workers in call for accountability

American consumers can shop with more assurance of quality and safety at their corner grocery store than American investors have when they shop for equities in our stock market. AFL-CIO President John Sweeney called for business leaders and government to curb "crippling greed" with a five-point action plan.

Outside the New York Stock Exchange and surrounded by more than a thousand workers, including laid-off Enron, Arthur Andersen and WorldCom employees, Sweeney called on the Securities and Exchange Commission and the stock exchanges to agree to a single higher listing standard for publicly-traded companies. That standard, he said, should require expensing and indexing of stock options given to CEOs and other good-governance reforms for corporations.

He also announced that the AFL-CIO will file suit on behalf of 17,000 laid-off WorldCom workers to get the severance they are owed. [MORE]
