Vote NO on Homeland Gestapo!

AFL-CIO

29JUL2002 Mad Cow is Back!!

Just three nights before President George W Bush arrived at the swank Colony Resort on Longboat Key on the evening of Sept 10, 2001, Mohamed Atta was staying at a slightly-less tony hotel just two miles down the beach, the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites - Longboat Key, according to eyewitnesses who contacted the FBI in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Predictably, the story went nowhere until Daniel Hopsicker got in on the act. [MORE]

28JUL2002 Why a War in Iraq?

The same George HW "team" (Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Armitage, Robert Zoellick and Richard Perle) is onboard with George WWIII in his (their) October "no-surprise" war. Scott Ritter says the next war in Iraq comes down to opportunistic politics as usual; anti-Saddam rhetoric promulgated by right-wing ideologues (as named above, plus the Iran Contra crowd that includes many of the old Reagan/Bush administration minions John Poindexter, Elliott Abrams, Otto Reich, John Negroponte, Mitch Daniels, and, uh, Richard Armitage, again), and the religious right wing cheerleaders (John Ashcroft, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Franklin Graham, Billy Graham, Bob Jones and Ralph Reed).

All of the above and other members of what Hillary Clinton referred to as the "radical right wing conspiracy" are bringing about a war that also serves a purpose beyond affecting the outcome of the 2002 elections, that of also generating some big time revenues for their U.S. defense contractor (lobbist) friends. The U.S. defense contractor dependent Israelis and Blair are supportive of the U.S. war against Saddam. The Brits generally, and the rest of Europe are NOT in support of what appears to only serve U.S. politics and friends of the U.S. Military Industrial Complex).

Speaking of Hillary's "radical right wing conspiracy" theory, take a look at a gateway to right-wing think tanks. Also see the Scott Ritter article. Sez it all!!

24JUL2002 "Moral Opprobrium?" Dan Pipes blames
the Palestinians for civilian deaths

In a transcripted interview with CNN's Aaron Brown, Dan Pipes said, "The Palestinians have the moral opprobrium here in having the leaders of their military in civilian areas. There is no distinction, and they are making it I think on purpose a target for the Israelis so that when the Israelis do strike, it's likely that they will have civilian casualties - the Palestinians are not playing fair. You don't put your military men in houses with children."

23JUL2002 Sharon crows over Hamas slaying

Letter from Gaza City posted by Jennifer Loewenstein

F-16 Warplanes zoom overhead daily. In Rafah they've been breaking the sound barrier. At night you can watch flares light up the sky so that the Israeli soldiers in their fortified bunkers all along the perimeter of the Gaza Strip and surrounding the illegal Jewish settlements on the interior can survey the area.

The staccato sound of gunshots in the distance is so familiar I pay no attention.

Up close it's something different. A boy has been shot in the back beneath the shoulder. [MORE - JL] [MORE - New Zealand Herald]

24 JULY 2002 - Ed. note: It was cowardly and criminal that the Israeli, with the most efficient intelligence agency in the world (Mossad), and boasting of the fourth largest military didn't have the balls to take out Hamas leader Saleh Shehadeh alone. To have bombed a whole neighborhood just to get one guy was chickenshit besides; as when the U.S. bombed 2,500+ Panamanians in an attempt to kill Noreiga, who they could have arrested or killed on any Wednesday of the week at the U.S. military's local officer's club. That the killing of civilians makes no difference to the Israeli in their military operations changes the nature of the Israeli/Palestinian problem significantly - a turning point as when the number of Israeli exceeded the number of Palestinians killed in a single day. See: The politics of murder, and Getting away with murder. Also for accounts of the F-16 strike that killed 15 including many children and injured 150, see Electronic Intifada's "Live from Palestine" diaries.

23JUL2002 Internment camps for Arab-Americans if Arab terrorists strike the United States again?

Peter Kirsanow from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights office is the Bush apointee credited with suggesting "internment camps" might be an answer to the Arab terrorist problem. According to Guardian Unlimited UK, Kirsanow also said, "Not too many people will be crying in their beer if there are more detentions, more stops and more profiling." [MORE]

20JUL2002 GEORGE WWIII

President Bush and Colin Powell are sitting in a bar.

A guy walks in and asks the barman, "Isn't that Bush and Powell sitting over there?"

The barman says, "Yep, that's them."

So the guy walks over and says, "Wow, this is a real honor. What are you guys doing in here?"

Bush says, "We're planning WW III." And the guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?"

Bush says, "Well, we're going to kill 140 million Iraqis this time and one blonde with big breasts."

The guy exclaimed, "A blonde with big breasts? Why kill a blonde with big breasts?

Bush turns to Powell, punches him on the shoulder and says, "See, smart ass?! I told you no one would worry about the 140 million Iraqis!"

19JUL2002 SUPREME COURT RULES EARNINGS
SHOULD BE PROTECTED AS "ART"

Recognition of Pro-Formalist Movement Gets WorldCom, Andersen Off Hook. In a surprise decision that exonerates dozens of major companies, the U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that corporate earnings statements should be protected as works of art, as they "create something from nothing." [MORE]

Investment note:

If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00.With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

If you'd bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) 1 year ago, drunk all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00.

Based on the above, the best investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

15JUL2002 Bush Begins To Lose It - Jim Lobe / The Black World Today

15JUL2002 ANALYZING CEAUSESCU
Carl Worden / Southern Oregon Militia

This administration has pushed through both the House and Senate the so-called Patriot Act which violates and indeed rapes, some of the most basic and fundamental rights afforded the citizens by the Constitution of the United States and Bill of Rights.

We know it allows the government to search a person's home without his/her knowledge, and to withhold from the victim the reason for the search, among other atrocities.

We know this president has used an unconstitutional Executive Order to reclassify two United States citizens as Enemy Combatants following their arrest on American soil. [MORE]

14JUL2002 Big Dick Cheney no diff than Big Dick Spiro (Agnew)

From the MoveOn Bulletin, see an in-depth look at Dick Cheney. It's not surprising that Cheney is avoiding the limelight: an SEC investigation is under way on accounting practices at Halliburton, the company he ran, and Congress's investigative body is still trying to determine how much of the Energy Plan he organized was shaped by oil, coal, and nuclear energy executives. Given his key role in determining the policy and practice of the Bush administration, an understanding of Cheney's history is important. [MORE - Energy, Oil and Arms]

12JUL2002 AN OATH WITH TEETH - Carl Worden / Southern Oregon Militia

One of my buddies is an ex-cop. Come to think of it, almost all my friends are either active duty or former law enforcement officers, ex-military and security specialists. Anyway, Mr. "O" and I often have spirited discussions about police procedures of yesteryear and today, and that naturally brings basic citizen constitutional protections into the debate.

Now, I have known Mr. "O" for several years now, and just the other day he admitted he didn't have a clue about the Constitution and Bill of Rights, let alone Supreme Court rulings that have served to clarify the citizen protections afforded by them. I remind you that Mr. "O" is an ex-cop, which means that in order to take the job, he had to swear an oath to, among other things, uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Another friend is married to a man on active duty with the United States military. She hasn't been real happy with my sometimes biting criticism of President Bush, and she reminded me her husband ultimately takes his orders from him. It is no secret this president has little regard for the rule of law where expedience and circumstance seem to call for it. He is therefore not a man of integrity, and in view of the fact he has violated his own sacred oath to the Constitution, don't expect me to salute or in any other way express respect toward him. If I were president, I would not violate my constitutional Oath, and that is the very least I expected from George W. Bush.

One of the most overlooked omissions of the Oath is that it does not require the individual being sworn in to uphold and defend the government of the United States. Read that again. The Oath is taken to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States -- and not necessarily the government. The Founding Fathers wisely foresaw that the government of the United States might be operating in violation of the Constitution at some time in the future (like it is right now) and they insisted that the Oath be to the government of the Constitution, and not to some future counterfeit government operating outside constitutional constraints.

But getting back to my original concern: What business does anyone, elected, appointed or in any other way employed in public service, have in taking an oath if they don't have a clue what they are supposed to uphold and defend? What are we doing with armed law enforcement officers on our streets who apparently took the Oath for no other reason than to get their first paycheck?

So here's my suggestion for badly needed legislation, and this would be particularly easy to pass in a state like Oregon, which allows citizen-sponsored initiatives to be placed on a ballot if enough signatures are gathered. It would mandate that anyone who is required to take an Oath of Office, do so only after required study of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, and after successfully passing a test proving their basic knowledge of that most fundamental and supreme United States law. At the very least, it would eliminate ignorance from any possible defense they might offer for their treason.
