A newspaper is not just for reporting news, it's to get people mad enough to do something about it. -- Mark Twain
VanGoghs Stolen in Amsterdam
08DEC2002 VanGoghs stolen from museum AMSTERDAM: Thieves broke into Amsterdam's VanGogh museum and made off with two early paintings by the artist. When told that "Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen" and "View of the Sea at Scheveningen" had been stolen, Oregon impressionist Curtis Hempt said in a phone conversation, "No problem." His wife later wrote in an e-mail, "Curtis intends to put Modgiliani's Girl with Braids aside tomorrow and start in on a stolen VanGogh. Curtis painted a Mona Lisa that is better than the original. And as you can see (below), the Curtis Hempt rendering of Renoir's The Seine at Argenteuil is also a grand piece of work - copied from the "original" that is on display at the Portland Museum of Art. The seller of print's display depicts a poorly colored reproduction of the Renoir orginal of Argenteuil that is actually on permanent display at the Museum of Art in Portland OREGON, not Portland Maine. ![]() Renoir's The Seine at Argenteuil by Curtis Hempt More info on the Amsterdam Theft.
