Frontline: The War Behind Closed Doors Two Questions: War Crimes and the 25th Amendment Rachel joins 1,900 Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers since September 2000 ![]() US officials have demanded a full and immediate investigation into the death of an American peace activist crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in the Gaza Strip. Twenty-three-year-old Rachel Corey was killed as she tried to prevent the destruction of Palestinian homes. Doctors said she died in the hospital from severe injuries to her skull and chest. Peace activists from the International Solidarity Movement were in staging demonstrations Rafah to block Israeli army efforts to tear down Palestinian buildings. Rachel, a student from Evergreen State College at Olympia, Washington, was the first international protester to be killed during the 30-month conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. [MORE] See IDF: Death of U.S. activist in Gaza was 'regrettable accident' Ed. note: None to my knowledge have reported Rachel being from Olympia. That is where her school is. She might actually be from some little Washington town somewhere. The Charlotte Observer reports that her parents live in Charlotte, with other family members in the Washington, D.C. area. They killed her. She was a high powered (American) flag-burner activist who didn't know what the killer instinct of a coyote is. Think about it. I love the coyote as much as the next Sierra Club or PETA guy you'd ever run into, but I know they don't know any better than to kill. The CIA and Israeli when cahootsed in the U.S. or in Palestine are no different than a pack of coyote. In the case of the Israeli (tractor driver), we really don't know if (they) weren't going to take any of (their) bullshit anymore OR if the tractor driver was just plain dumb; i.e., asleep at the wheel. There is an element of gambling involved in this one, or as mentioned, arrogance and stupidity; any other than one of them (coyote) is food to kill and eat. Or as mentioned, a PETA view of coyotes is also an indication of stupidity when it clouds what it is we're trying for here. Peace? Or as written elsewhere, for now, how about we settle for No War? With the death of Rachel, the Israeli have rat-shitted their gamble up one notch and the No War possibility has gotten slippery. Hisbollah told CNN they're not at war with The Great Satan, and secretly the CIA is having to hire people who speak French. Iraq war (still) pending. Rachel Corrie's Echo - John Nichols A CONTROVERSY OVER RACHEL CORRY - Danny Schechter "Activist's memorial service disrupted. Israeli forces fired teargas and stun grenades yesterday in an attempt to break up a memorial service for Rachel Corrie, the American peace activist killed by an army bulldozer in Gaza on Sunday." The activists organization added some details: "Before the short memorial could be completed, an IOF tank arrived and charged toward the mourners. The IOF command had been told in advance that the memorial event would be taking place in the IOF's unilaterally-declared, illegal 'security zone' where Rachel had been killed." "A group of international volunteers and media confronted the tank and told the tank crew to leave so the memorial could be completed. The tank withdrew a short distance then attempted to drive around the internationals and charge at the Palestinians gathered at the memorial site." Danny Schechter: Yesterday I told you about Rachel Corrie, the American activist bulldozed to death by Israelis a protest against the destruction of a Palestinian home. Yasser Arafat has now called her parents to express condolences. I am not sure if any Israeli leaders or US government officials have done the same. Israelis like Naomi Ragen now say: "Rachel Corrie got herself killed. An American, she had come to Israel to 'defend' the Palestian terrorists in Gaza. As an Israeli, how exactly am I supposed to feel about an American who comes to my country to defend those trying to kill my children? How am I supposed to feel about a girl who throws herself in front of my sons, my soldiers, who are risking their lives to uproot terrorism, forcing them to deal with naive foreigners who make their lives even more difficult and dangerous? Unlike the version you will get on CNN, the death of Rachel Corrie was an accident. "The army had dispersed a crowd of people blocking the way of its bulldozers which were uprooting foliage (not houses) used to hide bombs. Ms. Corrie chose to charge back in front of the bulldozer. Unfortunately, just at that moment, the bulldozer accidentally hit a concrete wall which fell on her, killing her." Palestine's Electronic Intifada website challenges this view: "As the photos show, the incident occurred in broad daylight. Corey was wearing a bright orange coat and was equipped with a megaphone. Labeling this incident as an accident is simply not credible. A later report from ISM Media Coordinator Michael Shaikh in Beit Sahouroffered more details about the events: "The confrontation between the ISM and the Israeli Army had been under way for two hours when Rachel was run over. Rachel and the other activists had clearly identified themselves as unarmed international peace activists throughout the confrontation. The Israeli Army are attempting to dishonor her memory by claiming that Rachel was killed accidentally when she ran in front of the bulldozer. Eye-witnesses to the murder insist that this is totally untrue." Meanwhile, an Israeli reader in the US forwards a letter she just received from Israel "The media here is getting hysterical - they've just announced we should buy all the very "modern" self-defence items: plastic , scotch-tapes... I'm very depressed because of what is going on with Israeli army - they don't give a damn about fire regulations anymore - people are getting killed everyday, houses being demolished and nobody cares. And it's not getting any better because as somebody said over here "It's not a country who has an army, it's an army who's got a country." Photos: Friends try to aid Rachel Corrie, a member of the "International Solidarity Movement" in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah Sunday, March 16, 2003, after she was run over by an Israeli army bulldozer. Corrie died Sunday in Gaza while trying to stop a bulldozer from tearing down a Palestinian physician's home. She fell in front of the machine, which ran over her and then backed up, witnesses said. Michael Moore's documentary, Bowling for Colombine, wins at France's prestigious awards ceremony in Paris.
In his acceptance speech Moore thanked France for "having the courage to stand up and say no" to US plans to attack Iraq. "One of the best definitions of an ally, of a friend, is that your friend is the one who can tell you when you're wrong," he said. "So thank you for showing us the way, for standing up and for something very important... I want to let you know that there are tens of millions of Americans who feel the same way." |

800 American professors sign document warning of Israeli ethnic cleansing
We join with our Israeli colleagues in calling for vigilance as events unfold in Israel and the Occupied Territories. With an average of more than $10 million dollars per day of American tax dollars going to Israel, we believe Americans cannot remain silent while crimes as abhorrent as ethnic cleansing are being openly advocated. We urge our government to communicate clearly to the government of Israel that the expulsion of people according to race, religion or nationality would constitute crimes against humanity and will not be tolerated. For more information about the U.S. letter, including instructions on how to sign it, see: www.professorsofconscience.org. |
