MORON NEOCONS* Strong Must Rule the Weak, said Neo-Cons' Muse
Analysis - By Jim Lobe
WASHINGTON, May 8 (IPS) - U.S. foreign policy being run by followers of an obscure German Jewish political philosopher whose
views were elitist, amoral and hostile to democratic government.
Suddenly, political Washington is abuzz about Leo Strauss, who arrived in the United States in 1938 and taught at several major universities before
his death in 1973.
Thanks to the "Week in Review" section of last Sunday's 'New York Times' and another investigative article in this week's 'New Yorker' magazine, the
cognoscenti have suddenly been made aware that key neo-conservative strategists behind the Bush administration's aggressive foreign and military
policy consider themselves to be followers of Strauss, although the philosopher - an expert on Plato and Aristotle - rarely addressed current events in
his writings.
The most prominent is Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, now widely known as "Wolfowitz of Arabia" for his obsession with ousting Iraq's
Saddam Hussein as the first step in transforming the entire Arab Middle East. Wolfowitz is also seen as the chief architect of Washington's post-9/11
global strategy, including its controversial pre-emption policy. [MORE]
*"Moron Christian Zionist (neocon) House of Cards" is an ongoing OCNS editorial
Ed. note:
Some days ago, Danny Schechter wrote under the mini-headline PROPAGANDA WARS: Satirists on the site
Zinos have taken this absurdity to its next logical conclusion with a joke that we may be seeing soon
being turned into a product: "To celebrate their recent victory in the cable news war, the Fox News
Channel has announced a new deck of playing cards, Traitors of America. The regulation deck captures
the faces of actors and entertainers who vocally opposed the war in Iraq, and will be awarded to those
viewers who, despite being in the comfort of their homes, "stay brave" and phone in to programs such as
Hannity and Colmes, and Shepard Smith's G Block. Asked to comment on what sparked the idea for the
playing card giveaway, weatherman and morning-show co-host Steve Doocy said:
"We realized that like our soldiers on the field our viewers enjoy a good card game, too. But it's
not like Saddam and Co. are hiding out in the local Tasty-Freeze, so we figured why not put on some
faces of other bad guys like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, who, even if they aren't seen on the
street, can at least be spotted in Hollywood films and other leftist media. It¹s a way to keep them
involved."
So I sez back to Danny: At first reading the deck of Traitors of America playing cards seemed
reasonable until they suggested Susan Sarandon and
Tim Robbins hold a king and queen slot. I thought the
cards might depict America's real traitors. Unfortunately
there are far more than the 52 players plus 3 jokers who
were directly responsible (or so irresponsible) for what
has gone on in the United States since December 13th, 2000,
and at the White House since 911, including the days of
ongoing war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I would give Karl Rove and Big Dick Cheney a couple of the
king slots if the players were ranked as cards in a
deck of cards and matching house. George W, Colin Powell
and Condoleezza Rice would be jokers of little significance
- except in a game with "jokers wild". Bill Bennett would
have made a perfect joker. If I could ask him just one
question it would be, "Bill, what odds do you give on
Hillary running for President in 2004?"
For the stacked-against-us deck, I would also nominate:
Elliott Abrams
Kenneth Adelman, Richard Lee Armitage, John Ashcroft,
James A. Baker III
James Baker has served as a senior counsellor at Carlyle since 1993, and brings a wealth of political
contacts after working in the US Government under three Presidents. Shortly before joining Carlyle,
Mr Baker was US Secretary of State under George Bush Sr, a position he held for three years from 1989.
Mr Baker also served as the Secretary to the Treasury between 1985 and 1988 in the Reagan Administration.
Mr Baker, a graduate of Princeton University, is also a partner in Baker Botts, a global law firm
headquartered in Texas, with more than 600 lawyers. The firm represented one of the defendants,
Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Saudi Defence Minister, in the September 11 victims lawsuit. Mr Baker
serves on the boards of both Rice and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He received the Presidential
Medal of Freedom in 1991 and has won a number of other awards including Princeton University's Woodrow
Wilson Award and The American Institute for Public Service¹s Jefferson Award. [2]
Brad Blakeman, Lincoln
Bloomfield, Samuel Bodman, John Bolton, Joshua Bolten,
Jeb Bush
George HW Bush
George Bush Sr, the former US President, has been advising Carlyle Group since the mid-1990s. It has
never been revealed how much he earns for his advice, although Mr Bush is reported to pocket between
$80,000 and $100,000 (£62,000) every time he makes a speech for Carlyle. He is said to be paid with
stock in the companies in which the private equity firm has invested. Mr Bush, who was defeated by Bill
Cinton in 1992, built his fortune by forming the Bush-Overby oil company in 1950 with partner John
Overby in Midland, Texas. Four years later he co-founded and became president of the Zapata Offshore
Company. Even compared with the formidable list of former politicians who advise Carlyle, Mr Bush has
a distinguished contacts book. He is widely credited with paving the way for $1 billion worth of
investment made by Carlyle in Korean firms in 1999. - In context: George W Bush, Mr Bush's son, also
worked with Carlyle Group in the early 1990s when he joined the board of Caterair, an airline catering
company that had recently been acquired by Carlyle. [2]
Stephen Cambone
Frank Carlucci
Frank Carlucci joined Carlyle in 1989, and acted as its chairman from 1993 to 2002. He is now Carlyle's
chairman emeritus, which sees him providing advice to the company's management and employees. A good
friend of Donald Rumsfeld, the US Defence Secretary, and the Defence Secretary himself between 1987 and
1989, Mr Carlucci has provided an invaluable connection between Carlyle and the defence industry.
A graduate of Princeton and Harvard Business School, he is also chairman of Nortel Networks and chairman
of the board of directors of Neurogen Corporation, the biotechnology company.
He also sits on the boards of United Defense, Texas Biotechnology Corporation and Pharmacia Corporation.
Before serving as the US Defence Secretary, Mr Carlucci was chairman and chief executive of Sears World
Trade, a business he joined in 1983.
Before that he held government service positions including Deputy Secretary of Defence (1980-82),
Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (1978-80) and Ambassador to Portugal (1975-78). [2]

Arthur Levitt
Arthur Levitt joined Carlyle Group as a senior adviser in May 2001. He also sits on the boards of
Bloomberg, the financial information firm, Neuberger Berman, the US money manager, and CCBN, which
helps public companies use the internet to communicate with investors. He also serves as an advisory
board member of M&T Bank Corporation.
Before joining Carlyle Mr Levitt was the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, serving
under President Clinton for nine years until 2001, the longest time that office has ever been held and
putting him in touch with an enviable list of powerful individuals. Before becoming SEC chairman, Mr
Levitt owned Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Washington's Capitol Hill. Mr Levitt worked as chairman
of the New York City Economic Development Corporation between 1989 and 1993 and was chairman of the
American Stock Exchange from 1978 to 1989. He also serves as an advisory board member of M&T Bank
Corporation.
He is the author of the best-selling book, Take on the Street: What Wall Street and Corporate America
Don't Want You to Know. [2]

The 14 Characteristics of Fascism
by Dr. Lawrence Britt
Dr. Lawrence Britt, a political scientist, wrote an article about fascism which appeared in Free
Inquiry magazine - a journal of humanist thought. Dr. Britt studied the fascist regimes of Hitler
(Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile). He found
the regimes all had 14 things in common, and he calls these the identifying characteristics of
fascism. The article is titled 'Fascism Anyone?', by Lawrence Britt, and appears in the
Free Inquiry
Spring 2003 issue on page 20.

Three Days of the Condor in Context.
An Amazon customer in writing a review about Three Days of the Condor (the movie)
said, "This is a
great New York City film. Its streets, back alleys, and buildings - in particular, the World Trade Center -
all play supporting roles. Sidney Pollack makes good use of the then-newly finished twin towers in
Condor - which features the main lobby and a top-floor office occupied by the fictional CIA deputy
director (Cliff Robertson).
Another reviewer of the movie says, "I remember the romantic plot well, tweed and blue-jeaned (Robert
Redford) with the beautiful woman (Faye Dunaway), trying to avoid being shot by CIA assassin (Max von
Sydow), who portrayed the calmness of old Europe. At the time, the film was unsettling but we did not
believe that the US would really go in for an oil grab in the mid-East. Recently, I read in the
International Herald Tribune that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Pearle belonged to a neo-conservative group
with exactly such a plan.* Unfortunately, those primates have come out of their caves, are in power,
and W has given them the green light. So, unfortunately, the film has much to do with what's happening
today."
The original Six Days of the Condor (the book**), was slimmed down and retitled Three Days of the Condor
for the movie. By contrast to the movie which zips right along with plenty of adventure, and which in
my opinion is a really well done film; superb story told well, good acting and so on, the Six Days
version (also renamed Three Days because of the movie's polularity) moves slower than the movie, and
takes place in the author's hometown, Washington, D.C.
Within the Six Days, Grady gives us a good tour of the town, with names of actual
bars, theatres and familiar Washington street names. Another reason for the slower pace of
the Six Days version of the story is due to Grady revealing in meticulously researched and his
detailing the nuts and bolts of the CIA and the tactics used by the agency.
*Ed. note: Even before the assassination of President Kennedy, and the Bush Family connection to Texas and mideast
oil, the CIA and the Republican Party was known, various mideast takeover plans had been in place and
implemented to ease the British out and pave the way for a New American Century kind of
op. Blood for Oil indicates that one such plan was nixed by Nixon at the beginning of a "story" that takes us up to
the Iran/Contra chapter. Fast forward to March 20, 2003, and
Day One of the Bush White House war in
Iraq.
